Restaurant recommendations? - Mickey - 11-09-2011

I'm curious what restaurants people think are best now. There has been a lot of turnover recently. What restaurants would you recommend at the low end, mid-range, and high-end of price? Thanks!

As part-timers our recommendations may not be right up to the minute but 3 or 4 favs pop up immediately:
a) Las Mercedes- high end- best meals we have had in the entire country.
b) The small japanese place ( Midori?) hidden off San Fernando plazuela. Inexpensive and always fresh and delicious. His curried rice ball would be my last meal request !!
c) In Marfil, La Terraza- casual, fairly priced bistro with excellent selections, quality and presentation. Breads are especially notable.
d) El Arte y Sabor- marfil consistently good, salads are very good.
e) Portofino in Marfil- authentic Italian prepared by a native. daily specials are wonderful and fresh.

We just tried Smogen. Very good. Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, pickled beets. My wife had pork loin chops. All good, comfort food. With shared salad and mineral water, $200 pesos.

Logan, Sally and I just tried "Matrioshka (Matriarch) Russian Restaurant" and fell in love with the food. The (recently widowed) owner told us that she is committed to delivering fresh food daily at a reasonable price (between 35 and 88 pesos), and her adorable daughter is helping her promote the restaurant. Mmmmmm! Finger licking good!

We highly recommend it. You might want to give it a try. They are located on the same side as ?Chahuistle? but it?s certainly worth the trip for a nice comida.

Their address is: Juventino Rosas, Km. 6.5 a un costado de la Universidad de Le?n. Tel.: 473 101 6417
OPEN: Tues thru Fri from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and Sat/Sun 1:00 to 7:00 pm.

Oooops! My apologies... Senior moment... I hit "post reply" before mentioning that I met the guys at "Smogen" last week. Wonderful folks also...

I was in the building where they are, for an event where they were serving food. The aroma of Smogen's kitchen was incredible. We have heard so many compliments on their food that we are planning on going there for dinner tonight...

For sure, Santo Cafe is affordable, casual dining with both inside and outside seating, the food is all very good.

In EL JARDIN, CASA VALADEZ has excellent service, meticulously clean bathrooms and some of the best arrachera I've ever had anywhere. Cooked to your specifications.

Above the HOTEL SAN DIEGO is FRASCATI'S, with excellent Italian and Mexican food, a great view (second floor) and elegant atmosphere. Overlooking the JARDIN UNION. Especially romantic at night.

In PLAZA SAN FERNANDO, DELICA MITSU has real excellent Japonese food at good prices with seating at tables outside.

TRUCO SIETE on the callejon close to the Plazita de PAZ, in front of the municipal GOV offices, has a very popular and comfortable atmosphere, very reasonable prices, but the food, while eatable, isn't anything great.

FELLINI'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT is the worst "Italian" food I've ever had, and I do not recommend the falafles at HABIBI'S: mostly lettuce, old pita bread, undercooked falafel patties with a massive amount of tahini sauce....a total mess.
