Censorship?
As a refugee from that other gtolist, which is plagued by censorship and heavy-handed moderation, I ask the management of gtolist.com to clearly state the policies of this forum. Will members' posts be monitored? If the management doesn't like a particular post, will it simply be deleted? What are the management's criteria for deleting or censoring posts? What are the policies on profanity, abusiveness, "flaming," and so on? Does the manager regard gtolist.com as "his" forum, or does it belong to the community?

For free speech and MINIMAL censorship/moderation,
Don

RE: Censorship?
www.gtolist.com was created and put in service to fill a need in the rapidly growing foreign community of Guanajuato - to offer a soapbox/forum/classified adverts/community bulletin board Open to ALL. If someone cares to join [and then hopefully contribute] the door is OPEN. One self-enrolls and then activates an account by clicking on a link in the enrollment verification e-mail sent to the address the prospective member provided. There is no "moderator" [babysitter] oversight/censorship. OPEN to ALL means OPEN to ALL.

"If the management doesn't like a particular post,?" well that's too bad. Bush 1 didn't like broccoli but he didn't eradicate it. It is probably naive to expect that the Forum will be 100% free of "profanity, abusiveness, "flaming," and so on?. It is hoped that members comport themselves in a civil manner. Considering something very offensive or outrageous may get posted the current thought is to move such a post to a sub-forum accessible by an additional password granted after a member wishing to read it accepts/acknowledges the terms and conditions for entry into the sub-forum. Notice of a moved message will be clearly stated. Messages will not be deleted. Threads also have evaluation rating check boxes [stars] and we encourage their use.

An original set of boiler plate rules was considered and then dropped. There were over 30 rules - a simpler set will be used once found. In the meantime members should refer to the forum's Netiquette page found here: http://gtolist.com/netiquette.htm

Does the manager regard gtolist.com as "his" forum, or does it belong to the community? Good question. As most readers of this thread will already know, another list in town is treated as personal property by its owner. This is something that has caused un-ease and discontent among that group's members. Although a site maybe "owned" by a particular individual I think once a group is formed a community dynamic occurs and the members feel that they too are "owners" and this is as it should be. Not allowing this would be to leave the member community with no rights - no voice - no vote in things. www.gtolist.com will be run as a co-operative should important matters need to be considered.
