Grocery shopping, preferred medical care
A friend of mine just returned from this lovely city and said she never saw anything more than an OXXO in centro..altho, she never left centro. Is there a Soriana, LaComer, or large supermarket where one does their shopping? and of Seguro Popular and IMSS which is more preferred? Medical care, in general, how is it?

Mercado Hildago, Commercial Mexicano and lots of small tiendas in Centro area. La Comer in Plaza Pozuelos and the market in Embajadoras come to mind. SP, IMSS as well as private options available. I have SP for big stuff, use private for routine.

Besides the public insurance options, SP or IMSS, we have an excellent private clinic/hospital and physicians in La Presa colonia. Office visits run around $30US without long waits or red tape hassles.

thanks for the replies....they´re very helpful to someone wanting to relocated. I´ve lived in many places in Mexico and they all seem to operate the same way, i.e., medical services, shopping, etc. But the input is very helpful, keep it coming!

Regarding this comment of JESM's: Besides the public insurance options, SP or IMSS, we have an excellent private clinic/hospital and physicians in La Presa colonia. Office visits run around $30US without long waits or red tape hassles.

I would appreciate if someone could give more detail regarding the level of medical care that is possible to get right there in Guanajuato City? Is there an "emergency room" available around the clock, including weekends? Is there any level of inpatient hospitalization/overnight care? Do any of the La Presa doctors have medical specialties, such as cardiology, etc.? Is there an ambulance service there or way to call for emergency help?

While we love Guanajuato, a main consideration for moving there is knowing what kind of medical care is available right there in the community.
Thanking you in advance for any further discussion regarding health care services in Guanajuato.

RE: Grocery shopping, preferred medical care
We have both IMSS and Seguro Popular hospitals locally. These are full line with 24 hour emergency care, medical specialists and equipped and staffed similarly to hospitals elsewhere. Unusually difficult cases may be transferred to the corresponding hospitals in Leon (45 minutes drive) which has far larger facilities and specialties due to its 1.5 million population, compared to GTO at 150,000.
The local private Centro Médico de La Presa has a staff of around 25 physicians covering most treatment fields, cardiology, oncology, etc. They have a small number of overnight rooms and operating rooms and can accept emergency cases 24/7. They emphasize elective surgery. Ambulance service is provided. It is run on a cash fee basis.
