I was assaulted last night at across from the Baseball Stadium
Heads-up:

I was walking home to Pastita around 2:00am last night. As I made a left onto Calle Pastita from Calle Puertecito, I was rushed by two twenty-something year-olds. One grabbed my neck collar and the other slammed an empty 40oz. beer bottle against my head.

Luckily, I able to absorb the blow of the beer bottle, keep my balance and shrug off the first attacker. I then began yelling and as I stepped back toward Calle Puertecito, my attackers retreated.

Here's where the assault happened: http://note.io/194Pz0z

I then made my way back towards Sange de Cristo where I has last seen two police officers were detaining a drunk.

They examined my head (some blood but just minor scratches) but they were more concerned with the stupid drunk than helping me get home safely. The drunk was taken away in a truck and the remaining officer disappeared twice after promising that he would help.

I waited almost an hour but then spotted a friend walking home to Pastita and I escorted her past my house and doubled back--only to see another group of drinkers (which had doubled in size on my way back) at the entrance of an adjacent callejon.

The group ended up not bothering me, and I finally made my way back home at 3:30am.

Conclusion:

Even the main streets in Pastita aren't safe. The police are absolutely worthless here. Don't walk around past midnight on Saturday nights without a sizable group.

Pretty much the same anywhere I've been in the world late at night.
It's a shame it is so but it is.
PS Last time I was out that late in Mexico was 1986 coming home from a night of dancing in PV walking home with not a problem,
Would not do it today anywhere.

My advice would be not to walk anywhere in Mexico except between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. Otherwise, drive, or, if you do not have a car, then take a taxi. This is what I do.

Consider yourself lucky. It is possible to be killed by being hit in the head with a 40 ounce beer bottle. Apparently he did not hit you with full force.

You cannot be serious.

I am glad to hear it did not turn into a more serious situation.

It is disheartening to hear about the lack of police response.

Yes MNRon, I am serious. I am stating what I do, and offering advice. I have never been robbed or assaulted in Mexico. The perpetrators of these types of crimes start to come out of the woodwork at about 5 PM and there is the remote possibility of them not having gone back into the woodwork early in the morning, such as before 8AM. They're kind of like vampires. There was a report here of a robbery in broad daylight at 7 something AM if I remember correctly. The original poster stated that he continued to walk around until 3:30 AM, even after being assaulted. The chances of being robbed or assaulted between 10 AM and 4 PM are nil.

Not sure I'm buying that 10 to 4 safety observation as banks are normally robbed when they are open.
Dark & alcohol are great allies of muggers.
PS in 27 years a Mexican travel I have never been a victim of a crime
Also I've walked by the Baseball Park numerous times before 10 & after 4.

So sad to hear about this. Even more upset because that is the corner we live on...we are on that first callejon above where you got assaulted. There was a neighborhood meeting a few weeks back about the increasing crime in the area. There was supposed to be a follow up one as well. Not sure what happened with that but I will let all of you know when the next one is. People in the neighborhood are trying to get the police involved too.

Oh boy.

Any useful suggestions? I didn't come to Mexico to cower in my home.

This blows Jay, and I'm sorry it happened, but 10am to 4pm is a nutty suggestion.

The baseball stadium is very well known as a place not to walk alone after midnight or the wee hours. Going there, Cerro de Cuarto, up behind Baratillo, or Valenicana at night amongst other spots are fairly notorious for this type of thing, which unfortunately you don't find out till you've been here for a while.

There are dodgy hoods in town, which are fortunately few compared to the whole. As a general rule, given where you live, where many friends of mine have been harassed, I would highly recommend simply biting the bullet and taking a cab home whenever you're out past midnight. It's the cost of a drink and it buys you piece of mind.

Guanajuato is a very safe city compared to almost any others in Mexico or anywhere else. But dodgy dark alleys with bad reps should be avoided wherever you happen to live.
