Telmex infinitum speed increases
I was at Telmex yesterday cancelling one of my lines and noticed a flyer announcing speed increases on their various plans. On returning home I did several speedtests (Telmex speedtest here)and consistently got over 5Mbps. My plan was Todo sin limites which had been promising "up to 5Mbps" so indeed there was a speed increase as you never get the maximum speed promised. However 5.21 Mbps is a far cry from the "up to 10 Mbps" the new plan boasts. (an additional upto 10 Mbps more [total 20Mbps] is also offered on this plan for $199MN/mo. more).

This is either an opportunity for some to get faster speed or for others to save money by downgrading their plan which is what I'll do by going from the fastest to the slowest which is now equal ["up to 5 Mbps" at $488MN/mo] to what I had been paying [$999MN/mo]

RE: Telmex infinitum speed increases
NOTE: on the Telmex flyer it says the promotion is valid 1-30 April. I called today [26 Apr] to downgrade my service from "10" to 3 Mbps and then add 2 Mbps more. Hit a snag as that is considered doing two things at once and Telmex is a mono-processor. A service order had to be written for the downgrade and that had to be closed before a second service order for the upgrade took place. 72 hrs [not counting weekends] has to transpire which brings us to Wed May 2nd before I can request the 2Mbps add-on. Telmex says it has no idea if the offer will continue beyond 30 April.

RE: Telmex infinitum speed increases
Telmex and everybody else are only increasing download speeds, and in my opinion, they are accomplishing this NOT by increasing bandwidth, but by making their existing bandwidth more asymmetrical. If you've been measuring your upload speed, you'll recognize that it's been declining.

I have Telmex 10 Mbps service and am getting 5 Mpbs download speeds, but only 0.6 Mbps upload speeds (0.8 tops, but sometimes even worse than 0.6). This is barely enough bandwidth for a decent Skype videochat, let alone attempt to transmit higher resolution video.

Both iUSACell and Movistar have also increased their 3G download speeds with a corresponding decrease in upload speeds.

4G users in the U.S. have the same complaints.

UPDATE on part 2 of change of service
The service order for my speed downgrade was completed within 72 hrs working as promised - Today [2 May] I called back to add the extra 2Mbps for 99 pesos extra/mo. on the promotion that said it was ending on 30 April. To my great suprise I wasn't told that the promotion had ended but was told instead that the additional 2 Mbps could be added w/o any additional cost. Now I'm back to the 5Mbps that I had previously at 999/mo for just 389

RE: Telmex infinitum speed increases
I don't understand this and I don't expect you to give me a seminar on line. Tho that would be nice. Both at home and at the bookstore, every computer that is connected says the speed is 54Mbps. That's way more than you are talking about. Is there a simple explanation?

RE: Telmex infinitum speed increases
54Mbps is as good as it gets ----for a wireless connection but that is not what we are discussing here.

Go to this website and test your Internet Connection Speed

RE: Telmex infinitum speed increases
Does anyone know if Telmex is "automatically" upgrading the service, or must I request it? I'm in the U.S. now, so that would be hard.

BTW, what is all this whining about Telmex? ;-) Here in the U.S., I have less than third-world connection speeds (1.34 dl / .56 ul pretty consistently) through Earthlink with our own monopoly Qwest providing the line at a cost of $40 per month NOT including telephone service! Most of the time I can't even watch a video on youtube without choking, nevermind uploading.

RE: Telmex infinitum speed increases
Constance, I think it is automatic. When I first posted I thought I had 'upto 5' After reading the Telmex notice I discovered I had 5+a little. [Under upto 5 I never had 5] so there was some improvement. About 2-3 days later at the corner of my street and Paseo de la Presa was a 3rd party fiber optic truck [sporting an Infinitum decal] laying fiber optic cable. A couple of hours later a proper Telmex truck pulled up and connections to the neighborhood box were being made. I checked speed again and I was getting a good 3+ [not bad for upto 3] A couple of hours after my upgrade to upto 5 I checked once again and was getting better than 5. I think the fiber optic cable is helping to make the difference. Each time I check I'm getting 5.25 or more so it was really worth the downgrade to get the speed I thought I had been paying for and saving around 650MN a month [what would have happened if I had waited and the FO cable was installed and I noticed a dramtic uptick in speed - would I have stayed with the 999/mo plan?]
