Xmas bonus for workers?
Ola,

We have a couple workers who have been working on our place the past two months and who also worked for us for 4 months at the beginning of the year. We understand that there is a tradition here of a Christmas bonus for workers. Does anyone know how much this bonus should be? Should it be a percentage of the wages paid? Any help here would be most appreciated.

RE: Xmas bonus for workers?
The "aguinaldo" is the annual Christmas bonus and it is formalized in Mexican labor law= so it is both kind and required. There is a formula but essentially for a full time worker employed all year it equals 1/2 of a months pay, or 15 days pay. It is due by Dec 20th. There are a million variations on this as each circumstance warrants differing compensation. But for us a minimum bonus 50% of what we pay each worker each month is a good starting point with extras as deserved, or not.
Smaller propinas for casual workers ( garbage, post, etc.) are a nice seasonal gesture to folks not so fortunate as you and I and can mean a meal or gift for their family where otherwise it may be lean.
Happy Holidays.
